Going in to this, I am expecting the same as this series has been standard as average rating for the Despicable Me series is 3.33 which is between “good but unenjoyable” and “good but enjoyable” in my book. This ends up being what the people of the prior films wanted, a pointless film that has cuteness written all over it. There’s a scene that has the Minions being subjected to torture, including a hanging scene. However this film, I feel, was also quite dark for a kids film. There’s this story in regard to Scarlet Overkill ( Sandra Bullock) taking the British crown for herself but you don’t really care about this because the yellow people say “banana” for laughs. As such, this film does not give much narrative or point to them either aside from “Minionese” antics which show that Minions don’t age over millions and millions of years. They realized that the kids who drag their parents to see this only care about the little yellow creatures.

The movie that honestly only exists for the studio to cash-in on Minion hype. The highlight aside from the cast and the good story is the music by Pharrell Williams. I don’t think its as good as the original but still very enjoyable and could be as good the first film, depending on who you are. The Minions are given more to do as well, due to their huge popularity at this point, and are turned into these weird purple creatures that are controlled by Eduardo “El Macho” Pérez ( Benjamin Bratt). This relationship is the main arc of the film but like the first film, the heart is with his relationship with the girls. He starts to grow attached to her but his adolescent years prevent him from getting close to her. He starts teaming up with Agent Lucy Wilde ( Kristen Wiig). This movie also takes Gru and he becomes a consultant for the Anti-Villain League instead of being a villain. Gru is struggling to raise them especially when it comes to Margo new interest in boys. These are adult themes for a children’s film and it did have me laughing a good amount but the logic of stealing the moon does not make sense at all. This character would typically not want a family of his own due to his relationship with his mother who always states her disappointment. This film though really shines with Gru’s growing attachment to the girls. Carrell and Andrews were the highlights to me and any interaction between their characters were hilarious especially with the accents they had to do. He’s clearly homage to the many James Bond villians but he lives in the suburbs and his lair is in the basement and he wants to be known as the greatest villain of all time instead of world domination. This film takes the idea of villains being more interesting than heroes. He tries to steal a shrink ray from Vector, to shrink and steal the Earth’s moon. The film tells the story of Gru, a super-villain who adopts three girls, Margo, Edith, and Agnes. Nefario and Julie Andrews as Marlena, Gru’s mother.
